For eight months in 1941 the Australian Garrison at Tobruk held back the full might of Rommel's Afrika Korps. The Aussies at Tobruk are the first force in WW2 to hold against, and repel the might of any German Army.
The defenders were dubbed the "Rats of Tobruk" in a derogatory gesture by German Propaganda. In typical Aussie style the Australians took the name as a badge of honour. The Aussie Rats of Tobruk are often mistaken as The Desert Rats (mainly British 8th Army). |
